I don’t believe in failure.
At least not the way most people do.
Yesterday I was talking about a challenge I was having with a Chappy scooter. The dang thing has a pesky electrical problem that I haven’t been able to identify yet.
So I hit it again today.
I don’t know how I missed it yesterday, but today I noticed that the rear brake light switch wire was broken.
It took me a minute to figure out what it was, but in the end, I isolated it from the main problem.
If you’ve never worked on an electrical problem, they can be downright annoying. Most mechanics that I’ve ever worked with simply wouldn’t tackle them. They’d gladly hand it off to someone more interested.
Not me. I was always the one they handed the problem to. Which is probably why I got pretty good at tracking down the causes of said problems.
Back to the Chappy.
I ran into an impasse when I was back checking the main key switch again.
I’d checked a few of the connections, but it was difficult holding onto the turn signal bulb, grounding it against the frame, and touching the jumper wire ends to the bulb and the connection I was testing.
Suddenly, I touched the hot test wire to the frame, which blew the main fuse. Then I dropped the bulb. It broke.
Dang.
It was then that I realized that the problem I was chasing required better equipment than my makeshift test light.
Time for a run to Wal-Mart.
I picked up a test light and a set of leads, but they didn’t have the bulb or the fuse I needed, so we headed off to an O’Reillys auto parts store.
When I got back home, I had other stuff to do (like getting online and doin’ a bit of marketing) so the Chappy will have to wait for tomorrow to continue.
Here’s the thing.
Did I fail because I haven’t found my electrical problem yet?
Did I fail when I blew the fuse or broke the light bulb?
Did I fail if I had to go to 2 different stores to get the stuff I needed?
I say nay, I didn’t fail.
I simply took the steps necessary to continue when things didn’t go my way.
Isn’t that all any of us can ever do?
I think it is.
Your marketing will work exactly the same way.
The problems will be elusive.
You’ll break things, or blow it somehow.
Sometimes it’ll take more than one (or half a dozen) stops before you find what you’re looking for.
But there’s a way to make it all a little bit easier.
How?
By setting up your marketing foundation on solid ground.
You’ll still make mistakes and hafta go lookin’ for what you need elsewhere if you require a special tool or something.
But when it comes to making things easy, it just doesn’t get any better than this.
