Know thyself.
Some very good advice.
I looked it up for accuracy because I believe it’s very important for anyone who wants to make the most of their time on this hunk of rock we call Earth.
Here’s what Wikipedia says:
The maxim, or aphorism, “know thyself” has had a variety of meanings attributed to it in literature. The Suda, a 10th-century encyclopedia of Greek knowledge, says: “the proverb is applied to those whose boasts exceed what they are”, and that “know thyself” is a warning to pay no attention to the opinion of the multitude.
Good stuff, eh?
Don’t brag about what you think you know or can do, and don’t believe what someone else says they know or can do just because they say it.
As one of my teachers puts it “If ya gotta say it, you Ain’t it.”
These concepts have everything to do with Marketing.
As a matter of fact, they are applicable to everything.
In marketing we’re told to find a “Coach” or “Mentor” and do what they say so that we can be successful.
But I ain’t buyin it.
Here’s my latest reason:
I see in a Flakebook(tm) group that a person can’t find the way into the back office of a training course.
This individual is looking for training on finding a niche and “Branding” themselves.
A few days later this same wannabe “Coach” is claiming to be able to help people with finding a niche and branding themselves
Difficult to believe?
It’s mind-boggling.
But this kind of thing happens all the time.
In fact, I’d say it’s probably the norm for most who refer to themselves as a “Coach”.
So what’s a newbie (or somewhat experienced) online marketer supposed to do?
My recommendation is to learn to think for yourself.
I say learn to do it because odds are you’re a bit rusty at it.
I couldn’t believe how much time I was wasting looking for someone to tell me what to do.
Don’t be surprised if you discover the same thing about yourself.
Just recognize it and take steps to fix it.
You can do it.
After all, I’ve never seen a book called “Find A Coach And Get Rich”.
But I have read one called “Think And Grow Rich”.
It’s cool to look for training and learn things from those who have gone before.
Just don’t be dependent on them.
If you do, you may find that the only people getting rich are the ones you’re paying for worthless “training” and useless “coaching”.
