He was an Olympic champion who carried surfing from Waikiki to the world, and in 1968 Honolulu’s newspapers gave him the front page.
Today is Saturday and I am going to feature Duke. But instead of writing about it, I would like to show you a video.
I found this pile of 1968 newspapers on eBay last year. I emailed the seller, and I asked if I can just buy it for $15 and explain that these are for archiving, not for selling, because I do blog Duke Kahanamoku. He said, “That’s fine.”
When I got the newspapers, I cut portion of it, which is the one I am showing on the video.
And one of them that speaks to me a lot was that one with the headline, “Duke to take last ride in the surf on Saturday.”
What I am thinking about is that maybe on my next video, I will be featuring that particular clips and read what’s in the articles and consider that for next week.
And when I show the newspaper, I mentioned that there’s probably seven or eight in there, and I would like to dissect them separately in a few more weeks to come.
