Two Postmarks, One Secret

A letter landed in my hands dated September 9, 1969. Simple enough — until I flipped to the envelope and found two separate postmarks staring back at me. One said Washington, DC. The other said Moon Landing, July 20, 1969. Right beside it, stamped in red ink, an astronaut frozen mid-step onto another world.

I had to dig. July 16 — liftoff. July 20 — the landing. July 21 — the walk that changed everything. July 24 — splashdown, and the moment I found out Apollo 8 actually held the record for fastest travel time before this one ever flew, my whole timeline cracked open again.

Then I went back to the letter itself. Rexford A. Bristol, Chairman of the Board, writing about a “cascade” of words already spoken for Apollo 11 — so many, he said, that his own would only add to the noise.

He wrote about the quiver that ran up his spine watching Armstrong step onto the lunar surface. About Aldrin and Collins landing safely on the deck of the Hornet.

A man clearly moved, clearly proud.

But the deeper I read, the more one thing stood out — something he never said at all.
