As I continue my exploration of Duke Kahanamoku through blogging, I have come to the realization that numerous topics can be derived from his life. Although my focus primarily centers on him, many individuals, events, and random images also significantly shaped his journey.

Today, I would like to discuss the Kahanamoku brothers across two distinct years. But, will see what other thoughts will come to mind later on.

What prompted me to choose this subject?

Let just say, I am challenging myself to talk about others that was part of Duke’s life.

Here is my many thoughts about my subject.

I will first examine a photograph taken in 1928, showcasing the brothers in their prime. They are all muscular and appear quite distinguished; I am uncertain if any of them were still single at that time.

Fast forward 26 years, and the brothers posed for another group photograph. By then, they had aged, yet they still looked impressive. Their reunions had become less frequent, as some had relocated to neighboring islands.

To better illustrate their evolution, I decided to create a side-by-side comparison of their youthful selves alongside their later years. This allowed me to study the changes of things I took noticed.

These photographs sparked a curiosity within me, particularly as I have recently become more aware of the passage of time in my own life, prompting reflections on my relationship with my siblings.

Like the Kahanamoku brothers, we began as a close-knit family, growing up together under the care of our parents. As we matured, we each established our own lives, leading to varying degrees of independence.

I often wonder whether, throughout the years, they maintained close relationships or if they became distant, gathering only on rare occasions. Unfortunately, there is little recorded history detailing their later years together as brothers.

In my search for information, I researched each brother’s marital status, children, and other relevant details. Aside from Duke, the remaining family members lack substantial stories; only their birth and death dates, as well as burial locations, are documented.

This storytelling endeavor has proven more challenging than anticipated, compelling me to pause and resume writing after an eight-hour rest.

Topics like this, which rely heavily on emotion rather than personal experience, resemble a dense forest—intriguing yet daunting to navigate.

I am not even sure if my story is in order or it there is a reason and rhyme, but I will keep going.

For sure though, one undeniable aspect is their innate ability to enjoy life, particularly during their canoing, paddling, and swimming adventures.

They exhibited a constructive excitement, a transformative experience shared with the ocean. This excitement stemmed from their individual encounters, rooted in their willingness to embrace the lessons presented by the water. I am certain that the feelings accompanying their learned lessons were marked by this constructive enthusiasm.

There is also that aspect of presentation where they found the joy of doing something to nurture their spirit by having a hobby or habit to be constantly being in the water which all make them excellent watermen.

When comparing today’s men to the Kahanamoku brothers, the differences in appearance are striking. Contemporary men often appear less rugged and more soft, with many being overweight rather than lean. Furthermore, there seems to be a lack of the strong, composed demeanor that characterized earlier generations, which is rather disappointing.

Men from the era of Duke Kahanamoku typically dressed in a refined manner, often sporting shorter hairstyles and exhibiting a respectful demeanor.

In contrast, contemporary men tend to favor more casual attire, such as sweatpants and flip-flops, and often adopt longer hairstyles, including buns. Unfortunately, this shift in fashion is sometimes accompanied by a decline in civility.

Upon observing the current generation of men, I have concluded that I appreciate the essence of masculinity characteristic of a bygone era. Such authenticity and strength of character seem increasingly rare to replicate today.

I have reached a point where I find myself unable to further elaborate on this topic, and thus, I must conclude here.

I hope that my next blog entry for Duke will be more engaging and enjoyable to read.

Thank you for your understanding, and I appreciate your readership, even if this piece did not meet the vibrant expectations I had envisioned.
