I been working on my Friday’s theme which is Betty Boop as something came forward as a new character but, in the middle of it, I was struggling writing and I will blame that on a smoky air that is been inside my house for few days due to a mountain fire that slowly being controlled now.
I went for a nap, but my body is not tired, just my brain, and because of that I got up and did other things.
After an hour of creative writing is not coming through how it used to be, I decided to halt the story for now until I get more ideas.
So I put Betty’s expired page calendar for a now, and then all of a sudden a song by Sade started playing, and I goes… huh, this must be the answer to that universal talk I had earlier when I said, “Duke, you have to give me a sign on what to write about you that is fresh,” instead of recycling those blogs I already wrote and slowly editing and adding more writing to it.
So, when that song “There Must Be An Angel By My Side” played, I stop for a moment, and I right away goes, here is that sign loud and clear. The song I dedicated to him when I started writing his blog.
As I was writing this blog, an image of him started appearing in my vision, so it must be a real validation of guiding me through story transition.
What I’ve noticed as I am writing this, is that I am not struggling coming up of sentences, and I keep typing faster, while it was opposite on Betty’s story.
In between typing this story, which is random talk, there is a deep question of what picture will I be using?
At first I remember I have a surfboard album as my feature image, but a more vivid image floated in my head of him standing next to one of his famous boards, and I know this will be the one. An old black and white postcard next to his surfboard, which if I am not mistaken, is permanently housed inside the Heritage Room at the Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club.
Why is this postcard instead of an album full of surfers images? Oh, because this is more than a normal postcard to me.
This postcard had a date of 02/14/2026, and I wrote something in the back, and I started by saying… It was Valentine 2025 when I started blogging Duke Kahanamoku, and it’s been a year now (with happy face emoticon). It was also Evo’s b-day, and he passed away 3 days after his birthday in 2022. Evo was my 12 years old dog.
Beside that, this is one of his vintage postcards. I also used stamps that are of him, which was released in public on August 24, 2002, the day and month he was born, and if he was still alive in 2002, he would be 112 years old.
Another important fact is that the postmarked place is Honolulu, Hawaii, dated March 02, 2026. Since my youngest brother lived in Hawaii, why not be creative, so I called him and asked if I can send an envelope full of postcards of Hawaii with already stamps on them. All I asked him to do is to drop it on mailboxes with different zip codes, so he drove all over and mailed one of my cards per day.
Next thing I knew, here comes postcards on a daily basis from Hawaii. This is one of my creative ways to make my postcard more interesting, and there is that joy of seeing them in my mailbox.
Which this brought me to another topic of I started sending myself postcards that talked about Duke Kahanamoku and whatever reflection I had those time.
Sounds corny for most people as not many will send postcard to themselves.
But, for me it is a like time card that had captured my raw emotion, which there is authenticity to my intention.
