Throughout my thrifting journey, I have encountered a myriad of questionable items that people collect. Remarkably, I have yet to see them all, which I find delightful, as it allows my curiosity to remain intact.
When I discover an item, I instinctively pick it up and inspect it, weighing in my mind the reasons for purchasing it. More often than not, I refrain from buying unless I can discern its potential value for resale.
However, there are instances where I do make a purchase, not solely for the peculiarity of the item, but because it holds a deeper significance.
Take, for example, a necklace adorned with dog tags with a vintage dog whistle. Upon first glance, it captures attention.
I initially bought this necklace with the intention of adding the tags of our two beloved dogs who have since crossed the rainbow bridge.
That was the original plan.
Once home, I meticulously cleaned the necklace along with the tags.
As I read each tag, I was enveloped by a wave of nostalgia, recalling the love we shared with our dogs. I found myself pondering whether other owners felt the same profound affection for their pets.
Our dogs, Cinnamon, a spirited Jack Russell who could run at 100 mph, and Evo, a charming mix of Dorkie and Dachshund who is a lover with a peaceful demeanor, will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Cinnamon and Evo’s tags remain attached to their collars to this day, and my daughter and I even created a Build-A-Bear to commemorate them.

Returning to the necklace, after it dried, I made the decision not to attach our dogs’ tags; it simply didn’t feel right.
To this day, I have yet to wear the necklace, though I occasionally consider doing so to gauge others’ reactions.
In my opinion, it serves as a conversation piece, as I have yet to encounter anyone wearing a necklace quite like it, laden with tags and memories.
